Horse & Hound was established by Mary Buie in 2001 in a convenient location in Carrollton, VA, only five minutes from Northern Suffolk, Smithfield, and the James River Bridge to Newport News. Six years after its opening, Mary decided it was time for her to sell the business and spend more time with her husband and horses (of course!).

Lisa Perry lives just minutes from the Horse & Hound and was one of the store's first customers. Lisa became a frequent customer and often thought it would be exciting to own the tack shop. In the summer of 2007, there was a sign on the door that the shop was for sale and on November 6, 2007, Lisa’s wish became a reality!

Customer service is the top priority at Horse & Hound. The shop is open until 7:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday to allow ample time for working customers to shop on the way home and it is also open on Sundays for the same reason. Horse & Hound is the only tack shop in Isle of Wight County open every day.

In just two short years, sales doubled and the inventory at Horse & Hound increased largely due to the fact that customer requests are handled quickly and many special requests become new products in the store. Due to numerous customer requests for feed products, ADM Alliance feed and nutrition products were added to the inventory in August 2008 and then Farmers Cooperative Association feeds months later. Another great addition to the store is the offering of Myler Bits. Horse & Hound maintains a large inventory of these quality specialty bits at the lowest prices in the area. In addition, Horse & Hound participates in the Myler bit Rental Program and the employees have attended several Myler bit clinics.

The most exciting news at Horse & Hound was the relocation in January 2010 to a larger facility just two minutes away from the old location. In this new space, Horse & Hound doubled its size and shares the space with an ideal complementary business, Virginia-West Boot & Art Company (www.vawest-boot.com). Together, the companies have created a Horseman’s One Stop where they offer hay, shavings, an extensive consignment area, horse trailer sales, embroidery services and much more!

It is never boring at Horse & Hound! From monthly drawings and monthly specials to events like day-long expos, Ladies Night, Painted Ponies contests and storewide sales throughout the year, there is always something going on!  Horse & Hound supports the equine community and non-profit organizations with monthly educational seminars and events. Customers can keep abreast of all the happenings on the website or join the email list.
